The next generation IEEE1588 PTPv2 timing network is a deterministic field
bus, based on synchronous GBit Ethernet and the Precision Time Protocol (PTP). The protocol is originally designed and developed for CERN to provide precise timing and event distribution for high end real-time systems and was therefore chosen as the timing basis for the new GSI FAIR accelerator facility. The details of this technology were presented during XXVII Atomic Time Scale Meeting TA (PL) conference in Warsaw/Poland Friday the 13-th of May. The new technology is enabling picosecond synchronization via fibre-optic Ethernet.
