Multi-pin Connectors for use on FMC front panels
Requirements
The connector type for a multi-pin connector for use on FMC cards has the following requirements:
- Must be a standard
- PCB mounted connector 9.5mm height max. Up to 40mm width preferred
- Lock or thumbscrew mechanism to fix cable to connector
- Halogen-free cable (a hard CERN requirement)
- Twisted pairs, 10 or more
- also available in an individually shielded version (twinax) to be able to use in sensitive analog applications
Wikipedia
Retained solution: Camera Link -Camera Link cable
- 26-pin connector
- 11 individually shielded twisted pairs (twin-ax pairs)
- 4 shield connections
- Cable assembly fixed to connector with screws
- Example of a non-halogen-free cable.
- Remark: let us know if you are interested in participating in purchasing a large quantity of halogen-free cables.

Connectors
- Issues to obtain this cable in a halogen-free version.
- Have at CERN samples of
- 14T26-SZLB-0LC High-speed MDR cable assembly (add a '-' at end of link in browser: wikis problem)
- N10226-5215-PC MDR connector 26p., Boardmount Thru-Hole Right Angle (about 36mm wide)
- Special productions may have 13 individually shielded twisted pairs.
- No flat-cables for this connector exist (3M, 16/7/10).
- Clips-shells are preferred by 3M. Camera link standardises on fixing shells with screws.
- Minimum order quantity prohibits us from buying from 3M.

Cicoil
- Halogen-free, LSZH.
- Special: flatcable.
- Loram Cable Connection - Erik asked if can be halogen-free (July 2010).

cables)
- Can build custom version in LSZH.
- Recommends thumbscrew version as is much more secure.
- No quote received (November 2010)
-
Northwire
- Can produce cables with outer jacket in LSZH.
- Standard cables are flame retardant, but not halogen-free.
- Can produce cables using 13 twinax pairs.
- Erik has received a sample of standard cable and a quote (August 2010).
- Order placed (Dec.2010 - CERN only)

Concepts.
- Received quote for special LSZH assembly (14/9/10).
CERN Camera Link assembly
- CERN requires cables to be Low Smoke, Zero Halogen. Electrically
they will be fully compliant to the Camera Link Standard.
- Order DAI for cables (CERN only, November 2010)
Camera Link Board Mount Connector
- 3M 10226-5213 PC: MDR 90° boardmount connector
- Datasheet: attachment:3M_MDR_connector.pdf
- Note that the 5213 is a special order, with a tail length of 2.8mm. This needed for the pins not to stick out too much of the FMC card.
- FMC spec: 1.9mm max PCB thickness, 2.9mm max overall thickness incl. component height.
- The compatible 5212 connector has a tail length of 3.9mm.
- PC: 0.76um gold plating. PL: 0.20um gold plating.
- Example order (CERN only).

- Not available in halogen-free.
- Cheap (30$ for 2 meters long cable), standard & popular
- 34 twisted pairs with overall shielding. Not individually shielded.
- small connector with mounting screws
- not sure if cable with individually shielded pairs is easily available (besides the National Instruments: NI high performance cables)
