Subject: Report from Tuesday's meeting
Dear all,
Here is some info from the meeting we had last Tuesday 24th May (thanks to Erik for the notes):
Progress on the UV meter
As you know, we have been in contact with the US company Solarlight who
make both the expensive
Solarlight and the cheaper Solarmeter meters. They are working on a
design based on their Solarmeter
platform using the amplified photodiode detector from SGLux. We were
very happy to see the
advancements Solarlight has made to get to a sensitivity on a prototype
of 0.001 MED/hr and we all
were eager to see if it is possible to even reach the level of 0.0001
MED/hr.
We discussed that indeed the level of 0.001 MED/hr had given problems in
the past. This was on an
outing when several people had the expensive meters, some showing 0.001
while others showed
0.000. So they did not know if they could take the UV masks off or not.
Serious discussions as it makes
an important difference to them.
Readings like 0.0007 and 0.0005 would be better so that one can say that
3 0’s is OK. Indeed we may
have to see with Solarlight if readings like 000.7 and 000.5 would be
possible on the device they’re
making now, so that we can say that everything before the decimal point
should be 0 to be at a safe
level. However we have to think carefully about the display so as not to
make it confusing for the users.
Andy confirmed that in CERN’s laser lab we can try to calibrate and test
one device. Bruce, Sebastian, do
you now have the necessary equipment (lamp + filters)?
Enfants de la Lune summer camp:
In the week of 18th July there will be a summer-camp for the XP kids.
Actually also the parents go and
there will also be people doing research on XP. We will go along to meet
the families and present the
prototypes of the mask and the UV meter and make a short presentation
about what we have done so
far. Probably around the middle of the week, which is when the XP
researchers will be there. Everyone is
welcome.
We believe that it would be really great if by the end of June we can
have a prototype from Solarlight to
show so it can be discussed at this camp. Erik will check if this would
be feasible.
Mask cooling research project:
Rémy Soubirane is a classe preparatoire student who has joined our team
and is doing his research
project on the optimisation of the cooling for the mask.
With Rémy we discussed a bit the different ways of cooling (peltier,
fans, phase change material), which
he can document at
https://www.ohwr.org/project/uv-mask/wikis/Mask_cooling
Iulia’s contract at CERN ends this week. A huge thank you to her for all
she has done in organising and
motivating us! Happily she will be staying around for a while and she
intends to continue working with
ThePORT.
Next meeting in around a month, date to be announced.
Cheers,
Andy
