Subject: Tuesday's meeting
Hello all,
On Tuesday evening we had another meeting of the UV-mask team. Li
presented some interesting
design sketches for the next mask prototype. Her design has a semi-rigid
structure containing air
channels for ventilation. Iulia has had no reply yet from her contact in
cooling & ventilation who we
think might be able to do some air flow simulations, so we suggested to
do some physical prototyping.
Andy will order some materials to do this, and he and Li will try to
organise a time to work together on it
before Li leaves for China at the end of January.
We also discussed the dosimeter. Some progress has been made in
understanding the requirements: the
expensive one used at the moment has a response to UV-B matched to the
erythema action spectrum,
whereas the cheaper one is measures mostly UV-A and thus gives only a
qualitative estimate of the UV-
B based on assumptions about the incident light spectrum. We have had
discussions with Bruce and
Sebastien from the laser group, and we will organise some tests with
them after Christmas to quantify
the responses of the 2 detectors.
We now have 2 Si-C amplified photodiodes available, and Andy will do
some simple tests to see if these
devices are a feasible approach for making a sensitive UV-B dosimeter.
If it looks promising he will
contact the manufacturer of the cheaper meter to see if they would be
interested in developing a new
model based on this technology. An alternative would be to design one
ourselves and find a company to
manufacture it. Erik has many possible contacts for this.
Information on the OHWR project site thanks to Erik.
We will meet again in Jan/Feb (date to be decided).
Cheers,
Andy
