Standardization at Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
White Rabbit was presented to PTP community on ISPCS2009 and ISPCS2011 conferences. During the Special Session (of ISPCS2011), devoted to the future of PTP standard and potential revisions, the WRPTP Profile was presented.
Possible standardization paths within IEEE
- PTP Profile (details)
- need to be sponsored by one of the technical societies or a consortium of scientific (CERN-like) organizations
- most probably requires only small changes to the current WRSpec (it is defined as a Profile)
- included within next revision of PTP (details)
- it has not been decided yet whether the current version of PTP will be revised (to be decided at ISPCS2012)
- if PTP is to be revised and and the difference between PTP and WRPTP is reasonably small, WRPTP could be included into the next revision of PTP (PTPv3)
- included into the next generation of Audio Video Bridging
(details)
- AVB includes 802.1AS (Timing and Synchronization for Time-Sensitive Applications) which defines PTP Profile -- 802.1AS's changes to PTP share similar goals to WR's modifications
- AVB Gen 2 will include low-latency/determinism/reliability mechanisms which are similar to solutions foreseen for WR Network
- WR could be considered for standardization within AVB Gen2 in many more aspects then synchronization
For Further Studies
- Technical aspects
- comparison to see how much the WR specification overrides IEEE 1588 specified behavior
- evaluation how much AVB Gen2 potential ideas/goals/solutions override WR's (in context of synchronization, reliability, ultra-low latency, determinism)
- Non-technical aspects
- procedures, costs and feasibility of the identified standardization paths within IEEE
- potential liaisons
