Standardization at International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
It was identified (ISPCS2011, Munich) that WRPTP is similar to a PTP Telecom Profile (G.827x) which is being prepared by Q13/15 group at ITU-T. White Rabbit was introduced to the group at the meeting in Boulder (USA, March 2012): an informative contribution about White Rabbit was presented. Participation in the meeting enabled an insight in the group's work flow, the direction of the standard's development and an informal feedback on the potential standardization of WRPTP within ITU-T.
A report from the meeting can be found here
White Rabbit was also presented to a broader (telecommunication) audience at the 2012 Telcordia - NIST - ATIS Workshop on Synchronization in Telecommunication Systems (info) following the Q13/15 meeting (1 and 2).
Possible standardization paths within ITU-T
- Profile at ITU-T: Within Telecom Profile (G.827x)
- long process
- valuable feedback
- compromises required
- Profile at ITU-T: Separate WR Profile (similar to Telecom)
- valuable feedback / useful for Telecom as reference
- non-telecom solution in telecom world
- starting curve / easier compromises
For Further Studies
- Technical aspects
- alignment of WRPTP with G.827x
- changes required to WRPTP
- Non-technical aspects
- procedures, costs and feasibility of the identified standardization paths within ITU-T
